The third quorum of priesthood bearers who have Churchwide responsibilities and authority is the seventy. Seventies are organized into quorums that do not exceed seventy members each. The purpose of this article is to briefly discuss the reason for creating units called quorums to run the priesthood. A quorum, by definition is just a chosen group. It is a Latin word used anciently to describe a selected group of people with special responsibilities. To become a member of the quorum was to become a member of a special group.

Each quorum is the same in basic purpose, but different in size and responsibilities. If you have more than 12 deacons in a single ward then you generally have two quorums of Deacons. To be a Deacon you must be at least 11 years old and hold the Aaronic priesthood. They are taught each Sunday by an Adviser that is assigned by the Bishop to help guide these young men of the ward.

As with the Deacons, the president and both councilors come from the quorum membership. They also have an Adviser, called by the Bishop, who teaches their lessons and helps them in their priesthood duties.

The Teachers are taught from the same lesson manual as the Deacons. That is explained in the aforementioned article on the offices of the priesthood. Two of the priests are called to be assistants to the Bishop within the quorum.

Priests are the 16 and 17 year olds. They also learn from the same manual as the Deacons and the Teachers. Note: New adult members of the Church are initially ordained to an office in the Aaronic Priesthood for a period of time before being moved on to the Melchizedek Priesthood, so you can have an adult who is also a Deacon, Teacher, or Priest, and performing their duties. Elders comprise the largest segment of priesthood holders in the Church. Most of the men in the Church are Elders because once you are made an Elder you stay an Elder for the rest of your life unless you become a High Priest.

It can also be held at the ward or stake level. It is planned and led by the assistants to the bishop in the priests quorum and the presidency of the oldest Young Women class. Young men may participate in additional overnight camps, events, and activities throughout the year, where feasible.

Paying for Activities. Activities, including supplies, are paid for by the ward budget. Travel and expenses should not be excessive.

As an exception, if the ward budget does not have enough money to pay for multiday activities, such as camps, leaders may ask participants to help pay for them. However, a young man should not be prevented from participating if he cannot help pay. With help from parents, they make plans, act on their plans, and reflect on what they learn. Leaders and advisers also offer support as needed. Parents and leaders may suggest goals, but they allow youth to seek their own inspiration about what goals to pursue. Youth are encouraged to complete at least two goals in each of the four areas each year. They should have regular opportunities to serve others in and with their families, during youth activities, and on their own.

Invite friends to participate in the Children and Youth program. Leaders work closely with parents of these youth to help them understand the program and determine how they and their children would like to be involved. Parents and leaders encourage young men to prepare to serve full-time missions and to share the gospel throughout their lives. Teach young men about the blessings of serving missions and what will be expected of them. Provide opportunities to teach the gospel in quorum meetings and other settings.

As part of this preparation, the bishopric or stake presidency may organize a missionary preparation class. This class is not held during regular Sunday meetings.
