Electric guitars, electric bass guitars, and some acoustic guitars are equipped with two strap pins — one at the lower bout, and the other at the top horn or close to the base of the neck.

Attaching a guitar strap to an electric guitar, bass guitar or acoustic guitar like this is straightforward — put the pinhole of one end of the strap over one pin, and put the pinhole of the other end of the strap over the other pin.

Many acoustic guitars are equipped with only one strap pin — at the heel of the lower bout. Although a second strap pin can be easily installed by any qualified guitar technician, it is not necessary in order to use a guitar strap.

Use a lace sold separately by looping it through the pinhole of one end of the strap and tying it around the headstock of the guitar by the nut under the strings. Put the pinhole of the other end of the strap over the strap pin of the guitar. The fitting buckle is supposed to face outwards on both sides, and you should always take care that your strap is not twisted.

As for acoustic guitars, the opposite end of the strap is designed to go around the headstock, right behind the nut. This is especially the case with nylon-string classical guitars. There are closed-loop guitar straps that look kind of like a ribbon for a medal, and you wear it around your neck or over one of your shoulders. Regular type of straps, like we have on electric guitars and acoustic steel-string guitars, are pretty easy to set up.

The other end should go behind your back, which leaves your right hand free to do all the strumming and picking. After placing it over your shoulder, you should test whether your guitar is secured. The next thing you should think about is adjusting the strap length. Install them by pushing the guitar knob through the central hole and using the ridges to twist the lock into place.

After doing this for each knob, the strap should remain in place no matter how you twist or pull it while playing. You do not need to install special buttons for these locks. They can be used over your existing strap buttons. Though strap locks are generally fairly cheap, there are free alternatives. For instance, one easy trick is to place a tight-fitting rubber washer over the top of each knob after placing the strap on the guitar. The rubber washer will hold the strap in place while playing, making it more difficult but not impossible for the strap to fall off of the guitar.

You can find rubber washers at your local hardware store. The knob on the bottom of my guitar is where I plug it into the amp. My strap won't fit, as it's too short! Any suggestions?
